Letter From School Council
Hello Parents / Guardians of CES students,
If I haven’t already met you, my name is Kara Kushinski. I have children in grades 6 and 4 in our school
and I am the current Chair of the School Council. It is a known fact that parents/guardians tend to avoid
School Council as they are not exactly sure what it is and some people find it has a scary title. My hope
is that in reading this, you may understand a bit more about the role of our School Council, you may
consider attending a meeting, you may consider taking on a role, or you may reach out with anything
you would like put on the agenda.
What is a School Council?
School Council is a way to support meaningful parental involvement in decisions that affect the school
and its operations. It is an advisory role to the school. It does not fundraise. The School Council
discusses school related matters including but not limited to school policies, rules and goals, school
budget and planning, school division polices, volunteers, PAT results and survey results, promoting the
school community, programs offered in school, extracurricular activities, school calendar and services to
improve student learning.
Great Reasons to Join School Council:
- To support your child’s education
- To get to know the school community
- To help the staff and students
- To advocate and have an impact on your child’s education
- To be informed of your school’s environment
- To contribute to the school
- To learn something new about your school
- To see how resources are allocated
- To hear directly from our School Admin and our School Trustee
- No volunteering required
- 7-8 meetings / year to come to when it works for you
I truly welcome each and everyone of you to attend a meeting and join in our conversations if you are
able or interested. The next meeting is our AGM and is scheduled for Sept 8 @ 6:30pm. The first
meeting of the year will be scheduled after that.
Thank you for your time in reading this.
