Orange Shirt Day

Last Tuesday, our students and staff wore orange shirts to honour the children who attended residential schools and to recognize the ongoing impact this history continues to have on Indigenous communities. At school, we continue to have important conversations about truth, reconciliation, respect, and understanding.

The orange shirt, rooted in Phyllis Webstad’s story, is a powerful reminder of the importance of kindness, empathy, and listening. These are important conversations that we will continue throughout the school year.

Métis History – Friday

This Friday, we are excited to welcome Métis History to Calmar Elementary!

Students will have the opportunity to learn about Métis history, beginning with the emergence of the Métis in the Red River area, through the fur trade and the Voyageur era, and into the present day with Métis self-governance and self-determination.

The presentation will include the Red River Jig, musical spoons, beaver pelts, beaded clothing, and embroidered artifacts. It will be a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn through stories, music, dance, and hands-on examples.

Parents and guests are welcome to join us in the gym at 12:50 p.m. We would love to have you there!

Career and Technology Foundations (CTF)

Beginning October 14, our Grade 4, 5, and 6 students will begin participating in Career and Technology Foundations (CTF) for one hour each Wednesday.

Students will participate in six different CTF classes, with each class running for five weeks before students rotate to a new option. Groups will include students from different grade levels, giving students the opportunity to try a variety of activities, discover new interests, and meet students they may not normally work with.

We are excited to provide students with this opportunity to explore, create, learn new skills, and have some fun along the way!

October Assembly & Halloween Parade

Our next monthly assembly will be Friday, October 30 at 8:35 a.m. This month, we will celebrate students who have demonstrated our school’s core value of kindness.

The assembly will also include our Halloween Parade, and families are welcome to join us in the gym for the celebration. We look forward to seeing some great costumes!

School Council & Parent Teacher Association

Looking ahead, we invite you to attend our next School Council and Parent Teacher Association meeting on Tuesday, November 3 at 3:30 p.m.

Your participation provides valuable input and helps shape the school experience for all of our students. We would love to see many of you there!

Drop-Off & Pick-Up Reminders

A reminder to please continue following our parking and traffic expectations during drop-off and pick-up times. Please use the crosswalks when crossing the parking area and roads.

We appreciate seeing students walking their bikes when using the crosswalks. Thank you to our families for helping reinforce these safety expectations. Your cooperation makes a difference every single day and helps us keep our students safe.

A Thanksgiving Message

As we approach Thanksgiving, I want to take a moment to share my gratitude.

We are fortunate to have a dedicated staff who go above and beyond to care for our students, supportive parents who work alongside us, and, most importantly, incredible students who remind us every day of the joy of learning.

Thank you for being part of our Calmar Elementary community. I hope the Thanksgiving long weekend brings everyone an opportunity to slow down, rest, and enjoy time with family and friends.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Calmar Elementary!

Warm regards,

Carla Fisher

Principal

Custodian Appreciation Day

On October 2, we celebrated Custodian Appreciation Day and took a moment to recognize our two amazing custodians, Dennis and Elsa!

Our custodians do so much behind the scenes to keep Calmar Elementary clean, safe, welcoming, and ready for our students and staff each day. From the everyday cleaning and maintenance to the many little things that often go unnoticed, their work makes a big difference in our school.

Thank you, Dennis and Elsa, for all that you do for our school community. We appreciate you!

Read-In Week!

We are excited to celebrate Read-In-Week from October 5–9 at our school! Throughout the week, special guest readers will be joining us in the library to share their favourite stories with our classes. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to enjoy the magic of reading and hear stories from members of our school community. We are looking forward to welcoming our guest readers and making reading a special part of our week!
